Not sure how many people have actually listened to the entire "I Have a Dream" speech by Martin Luther King Jr. I thought today would be a great day for people to read through it if you haven't ever read it, it is amazing, read it again.

I have a Dream.

Delivered on the steps at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C.

August 28, 1963

Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of captivity.

But one hundred years later, we must face the tragic fact that the Negro is still not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languishing in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land. So we have come here today to dramatize an appalling condition.

In a sense we have come to our nation's capital to cash a check. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men would be guaranteed the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check which has come back marked "insufficient funds." But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation. So we have come to cash this check -- a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice. We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of now. This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to open the doors of opportunity to all of God's children. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood.

It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment and to underestimate the determination of the Negro. This sweltering summer of the Negro's legitimate discontent will not pass until there is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality. Nineteen sixty-three is not an end, but a beginning. Those who hope that the Negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual. There will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights. The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges.

But there is something that I must say to my people who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice. In the process of gaining our rightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.

We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. Again and again we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force. The marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the Negro community must not lead us to distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny and their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom. We cannot walk alone.

And as we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall march ahead. We cannot turn back. There are those who are asking the devotees of civil rights, "When will you be satisfied?" We can never be satisfied as long as our bodies, heavy with the fatigue of travel, cannot gain lodging in the motels of the highways and the hotels of the cities. We cannot be satisfied as long as the Negro's basic mobility is from a smaller ghetto to a larger one. We can never be satisfied as long as a Negro in Mississippi cannot vote and a Negro in New York believes he has nothing for which to vote. No, no, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.

I am not unmindful that some of you have come here out of great trials and tribulations. Some of you have come fresh from narrow cells. Some of you have come from areas where your quest for freedom left you battered by the storms of persecution and staggered by the winds of police brutality. You have been the veterans of creative suffering. Continue to work with the faith that unearned suffering is redemptive.

Go back to Mississippi, go back to Alabama, go back to Georgia, go back to Louisiana, go back to the slums and ghettos of our northern cities, knowing that somehow this situation can and will be changed. Let us not wallow in the valley of despair.

I say to you today, my friends, that in spite of the difficulties and frustrations of the moment, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal."

I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slaveowners will be able to sit down together at a table of brotherhood.

I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a desert state, sweltering with the heat of injustice and oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.

I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

I have a dream today.

I have a dream that one day the state of Alabama, whose governor's lips are presently dripping with the words of interposition and nullification, will be transformed into a situation where little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls and walk together as sisters and brothers.

I have a dream today.

I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.

This is our hope. This is the faith with which I return to the South. With this faith we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.

This will be the day when all of God's children will be able to sing with a new meaning, "My country, 'tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrim's pride, from every mountainside, let freedom ring."

And if America is to be a great nation this must become true. So let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire. Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York. Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania!

Let freedom ring from the snowcapped Rockies of Colorado!

Let freedom ring from the curvaceous peaks of California!

But not only that; let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia!

Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee!

Let freedom ring from every hill and every molehill of Mississippi.

From every mountainside, let freedom ring.

When we let freedom ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, "Free at last! free at last! thank God Almighty, we are free at last!"

Gidget's Weekend

We had a great weekend with little Gidget.

We went to Petco, Pet Smart and she waited in the car with Tim while I went into Target. We weighed her at Pet Smart and she weighs a whooping 7.2 pounds, a tiny little girl. We took her in the car both days this weekend and we also went to the little doggie park in my hood both Saturday and today. The park isn't fenced in, but is basically where the dogs go in my neighborhood to go potty and run a little. We wanted to see if she would run (on her leash of course) so I ran ahead and she and Tim came running behind, you should see her little legs go and her ears flap with every stride, it is hilarious and super cute. I couldn't get a video because I have to run in order to get her to run.

UPDATE - BayLee likes it when we leave the house and he gets his alone time. Gidget is getting more confident by the hour and she has started to bark at BayLee. We are correcting this behavior immediately though as she started to run at BayLee too when he enters the room we are in. BayLee is ok though, spends time in the bedroom alone and in his climber looking down on all of us. We all sleep together so he can't be too traumatized. Gidget gets spayed tomorrow so BayLee will get a day off and hopefully a little break while she heals.

Meet Gidget!
I have been looking for a little buddy and Wendy found her online at a local rescue yesterday while we were on our lunch break and the rest is history. For those of you who know me, you know I am an animal lover have always wanted a dog but was scared to ask my landlords. Well, I asked. Happy Happy!

For those of you who are wondering about BayLee, he is pretty mellow so far. Gidget and him touch noses, she is indifferent to him and watches him while he is busy walking the perimeter and showing her that he is the boss. So far, no swats, hissing or bad behavior. Believe it or not, we all slept in the same bed last night. I hope this is a glimpse into the future and they keep getting along.

Oops I Did It Again

Had to make another one of these breakfast braids, after all, it was another holiday weekend and we needed something special for breakfast on Saturday. I have to admit, I didn't take as much care with the braiding this time and was a little quick since I put it together late Friday night and was tired.

This time I swapped the lemon curd for raspberry jam and it was incredible!

No joke, I had one slice, Tim ate the rest of it and LOVED it.

If you love baking bread and sweet lemony goodness like I do; you must try this recipe from Smitten Kitchen. I made it for Christmas breakfast and we can't stop ooooing and ahhhing over it. Wish you could smell how fragrant this is while it bakes, it is amazing. I can't wait to make it again with the same filling minus the lemon curd add raspberry jam! Yaozaa!

Cookbook Love

My cup runneth over when it comes to Cookbooks. Some of you have seen my cookbook cabinet - it is insane. I must clean it out in 2012 and get rid of what I am not using (maybe I will post the giveaways and share them with you all - good idea?).

Can one really have too many cookbooks though? In my mind, the answer is a resounding NO. I guess as long as I am still making things out of them, I can keep them. I got the following books for Christmas this year.

I am so excited to read them all and I will take them in word for word like novels, slowly pouring over every recipe, going through all the prep in my mind and imagining the finished product and how it tastes. Looks like I have my reading cut out for me. Time to get out the tape flags so I can mark what I want to make.

Gingerbread House

We had a Gingerbread House party today at the end of the work day. People that have kids, brought them to the office and everyone got to make a gingerbread creation out of the houses that a couple of my coworkers so lovingly assembled ahead of time. Basically, we all got to do the past part which is decorate the houses!

Thanks for not taking anything, I don't keep anything worth stealing in there anyway...duh!

Maybe the alarm wasn't on, maybe the drivers side door was open, I don't know but you didn't break a window and I appreciate that.

One thing I just want to know...why do you have to throw all of the contents of my glove box all over the car, can't you just look through and put it back like you found it?

Also...I have a car that is hard (I hope) to hot wire so after trying I would appreciate you putting the seat back the way it was; I couldn't even reach the pedals...you must have been a big son of a buck. I noticed you checked yourself out in the drivers side vanity mirror too and left it down...classy. I hope you think you looked good violating my personal property jackass.

Dinner Rolls

I made these dinner rolls today to go with the pea soup I had cooking in my crock pot and they did not disappoint. I tweaked the recipe a bit and used almond milk* (we are not milk people) and they were terrific! These rolls take a while with the two rises, but are so worth it. My house smelled of fresh baked bread and once I split one open I was in heaven. The rich yeasty scent and fluffy insides lapped up butter like a kitten to milk.

I love that we had these rolls with the soup and for dessert with jam. I cut the recipe in half because having 30 of these around our house would not be good for anyone. I highly recommend these and would make them again in a second. Maybe next time the full recipe with half used for cinnamon rolls. Gulp.

* Did you know you can replace regular milk with soy or almond without and issue? Rice milk is a different story though, been there, done that, won't do it again.

Actually, you should probably buy two because once you open them they will be gone. Sweet, salty and a little bit of peppermint...oh mamma, these are amazing.

Thanksgiving Long Weekend Recap

It all began with baking…isn’t that how every good time starts?

I made a pumpkin spice cake (recipe here) on Tuesday night along with 4 pastry crusts for pies so everything was ready for when my Mom and Dad arrived as my Mom is the pie master. We picked them up at the airport on Wednesday late morning and had a nice lunch and moved the party to my house where the baking continued. My Mom made a pumpkin, a pecan and an apple pie while I prepped the insides of the pies, she rolled out the crusts and put them together. When the pies were done we headed downtown to check them in to their hotel and off to dinner at Villa Romano for one of the best pizzas in town.

Thursday morning I rose early so I could make some cream cheese brownies and the frosting for the pumpkin spice cake. Once everything was done it was time to get ready and head down to Robin and Kenny’s for Thanksgiving Dinner and what a nice dinner it was. Two kinds of turkey (one roasted, one smoked), a ham and ALL the sides you could ever ask for. There were about 15 of us and we all sat down to eat together which was really nice and is really hard to pull off, so bravo to the Garrison’s as I know it was a lot of hard work. After the meal, there was football to be watched, dishes to be rinsed and desserts to be prepped. Kenny went all out and made a cheesecake that not only had a toffee bottom, but had pecan pralines and chocolate ganache on top! We carefully laid out the desserts under the watchful eyes of all the kids and dug right in. This was one of the best Thanksgivings I have had in California. Both the food and the fellowship were top notch.

Friday morning, I had an appointment to get my haircut so we took it kind of slow in the morning. After my haircut we went and picked up Mom and Dad at their hotel and hung out in my neighborhood. We had lunch at Liberty Café (great turkey cobb salad) and then went to my house to watch the Red Wings and Bruins game we recorded from earlier in the day. We all walked down to Emmy’s Spaghetti Shack for dinner, which was delicious as always.

Saturday (Tim’s Birthday!) we got an early start and drove up to Sterling Winery in the very north of the Napa Valley and rode the gondola through the trees up to the winery. The view was exceptional, the fall colors on the floor of the valley were like an autumnal patchwork quilt full of burnt red, deep mustard and everything in between. After the wine tasting we went to St. Helena to walk the shops and have lunch at Cindy’s Backstreet Kitchen. We made a stop at the Bike Shop after lunch and our friend Brain was working so it was a nice surprise to see him and in his element (surrounded by bikes). After fighting the traffic during the long ride home I was wiped out so we called it a day.

Sunday I needed to rest a bit. I got my nails done in the morning and ran errands in the afternoon. Before I knew it, it was time to get ready for dinner. We had Tim’s Birthday Dinner at Wayfare Tavern (Tyler Florence’s restaurant). It was amazing to say the least. We are so lucky to live in the Bay Area, a food mecca. I swear every time my parents come to visit, we have a list of places we have to go and eat. This meal was one of the best I have had in a long time, from the hot popovers once we were seated and the handcrafted cocktails to the sweet ending to the meal. Top notch.

Mom and Dad flew home on Monday morning and I went back to work, ready to start another week. It was a such a nice visit and a great Thanksgiving. Hope you all had a great holiday weekend as well.

German Flag Cake

I made this cake for my dear friend Erika and her husband David. David is in the military and they are moving to Germany as part of his service. We will miss them terribly. Since we met they have been in California, Guam, Italy, back to California and now Germany. They are globe trotters for sure and we wish them all the best in the world and really hope to visit them in Germany while they are there.
Let me preface these photos by saying...these are not stylized shots and they aint pretty. What I do love about them is the patiently waiting childrens hands in the photo before the cake was cut. Simple cake to make, you just have to be patient making three seperate layers of cake (unless you use a mix, which I did not) - I made a layer of each; basic yellow cake, red velvet and chocolate fudge. The yellow didn't rise to the occasion like the other layers, but it is home made and imperfections make it all the better if you ask me.
The chocolate frosting was the best I have ever made, simple and so delicious!
Here is the recipe...

1.5 (3/4 Cup) sticks of Butter (softened)

10 Tbls Evaporated Milk

2 Tbls Vanilla

1 Cup Unsweetend Cocoa Powder

6 Cups Powdered Sugar

Sift sugar and cocoa together and set aside.
Beat sugar until fluffy and slowly add dry mixture alternating with milk until well blended. Add vanilla and beat together one more time.

Foo Fighters

If you are ever looking for a ROCKIN' concert experience, I highly recommend going to see the Foo Fighters. After being very spoiled a couple years ago and scoring tickets to see them in a High School Auditorium acoustically I didn't know if anything could top it. This didn't top it, but it was right up there for sure. Dave and the guys played for close to 3 hours without any significant breaks. The night was topped off with a 5 song encore that started with an acoustic session with just Dave and his guitar. For two old ladies, Wendy and I did pretty good and even made it to work the next day which was yesterday, I was so tired I couldn't post (ha ha!). Anyway, Dave Grohl, if you are reading this, and you must be right? Thanks for a great night and we love you! Keep the music coming and we will keep rockin.

Athens Part 2

Yesterday was a great day in Athens, well at least the second half...I slept the first half. I think changing the travel arrangements, waiting anxiously to get to Athens, etc. wore me out.

We all met up for lunch at our hotel around 1:30 PM - Robin and Kenny both went to the Acropolis in the morning. After lunch and a quick nap we headed over to the New Acropolis Museum which was incredible. It just opened in 2009 and is amazing...I cannot believe how old the pieces are and the structure itself is pretty cool as well, basically emulating the Parthenon and when it gets dark, the reflection on the windows really gives you an idea of what it was like to see it back in the day. Kenny counted the columns of the Parthenon and the columns in the museum and put it all together, pretty cool. I highly recommend this museum to anyone traveling to Athens, it will blow your mind. At night, even after it is closed, you can see the statues on the glassed in 4th floor. After the museum (we were there for about 3 hours), it was dinner time so we went to a nice traditional restaurant with music and dancing. I can't get enough spinach pie so I ordered it yet again and had giant beans, saganaki (sp) and stuffed grape leaves. I am packing in all the Greek food I can before I leave, that is for sure.

Today we are headed to the Ancient Agora this morning and then the National Archeological Museum - both of these things are two highlights I missed on my last trip to Athens and I am super excited to check them out. Later this afternoon/evening we will all head to our hotel close to the airport as we have early morning flights and the hotel has a free airport shuttle. I need to head to the airport at 3 AM believe it or not, but I am not complaining, I am ready for my own bed and some Mexican food at this point. Maybe an update later before I head home.

We made it to Athens all safe and sound. We took a water taxi from Hydra across to the Peloponnese and had a driver waiting there for us in a fat Mercedes taxi that comfortably took us to Athens (about 2.5 hours). Our cab driver was the best, pointing out things and stopping mid way for coffee and spinach pie. When we entered Athens our driver told us that Thursday (the bad riot day) no one could get into Athens, so it was good we decided to come here when we did. Our hotel is very nice and situated in walking distance to the ancient sites, the New Acropolis Museum and the Plaka which is all you really need in Athens if you ask me. We have rooms with super soft beds, which is a nice change from the planks we all slept on at the house in Hydra. All was quiet here yesterday and everything is supposed to be mellow today as well so we are optimistic going into the weekend and are praying that Sunday is ok and we can get a cab to our hotel by the airport and our early morning flights on Monday are not disrupted. I slept in today and am just hanging out at the hotel until I feel like getting moving. Having been to the Acropolis before it is not a must see while I am here (although it feels like it should be). We can see it from the roof of our hotel, not the same, I know, but with limited time here and being pretty exhausted I am spending my time wisely and doing only what I want. From what I hear, Kenny took off early this morning to conquer the ancient sites and take photos - he is super excited as it is dream of his to see all of this. It is pretty overwhelming when you think about how old these things are, pretty darn cool. I would like to hit the New Acropolis museum next to our hotel before we leave and that is about all I have on my list before we head out. Maybe the Ancient Agora as well. We will see.

So, ferry strike is now for 48 more hours and we are unsure if we can even leave the island on Sunday so with that said and with the help of some very nice people here (one from Texas, but has lived here for 25 years) we are taking a water taxi across to the Peloponnese followed by the most expensive cab ride ever to our hotel in Athens. Hanging in Athens until flight time on Monday. Please pray that we are safe and can get home soon and our flights are still running on Monday. We may have to stay in the hotel the entire time in Athens but we are getting closer to getting home. Hopefully we will have internet access at the hotel.

Will report back when I can.

A Few More Days

Well, strikes have extended 48 more hours so I am missing my flight out of here and we are unable to leave Hydra until at least Friday. We will see. Hoping to get a flight back to the states on Monday. Thank you to Wendy (for watching out for me), Mom (for calling Dr. Const, ha ha!) and Deb (for all of my travel). Most of all, Thank You God for forcing me to take a couple more days off, it is beautiful here and we are able to stay in the house since no new guests can arrive and we can't leave.

No internet at our house any longer, which has forced us to really check out.
Anyway, no Manic Monday post this week since I do not have one prepared.
On the island for one more day due to strikes of every kind so back to Athens on the 19th instead of the 18th. We will see what happens with my trip back home. I may have to stay here forever...
I will try and update when we get to Athens, but we may not stay there long due to lots of civil unrest. I have a feeling no Acropolis this time and I just hope I can get out and get some sandals. Priorites people... Ha!

Each month, KIND challenges its community to carry out a specific act of kindness (KINDING Mission) on the first Tuesday of the month. This month, KIND challenges residents of San Francisco to send a thoughtful note or email to a woman who has impacted their life.

If-and-only-if enough people sign up to complete this KINDING Mission (click here ->KINDING Mission), KIND pays it forward with a BIG KIND Act for a local community in need (similar to Groupon - but for good!). This month, KIND will team up with National Breast Cancer Foundation to hand deliver care packages to women undergoing radiation and chemotherapy at a local hospital, bringing them comfort and support during their courageous struggle.

Here are the details:

The KIND Food Truck will be parked on 333 Market Street between Front and Beale from 7:30 AM to 9:30 AM and will also be parked at the San Francisco MOMA (Third Street between Howard and Mission) between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM. At the truck we will provide thoughtful note cards that can in turn be filled out and given to a woman who inspires you.

Taste of Greece

The food fest weekend continued today with the Taste of Greece festival at the Annunciation Cathedral on Valencia Street. The Greeks are a lot like the Maltese, they love to eat and dance and today was full of both. Our friend the sun actually came out as well, which lead us to stay outside at the festival for almost 4 hours. The great part was...there was plenty of tables and chairs set up inside and outside for everyone who wanted to sit and enjoy the music and dancing.

The food was incredible, I didn't expect anything less. I had spanakopita, dolmades and roasted potatoes with ice cold Mythos. Tim had pastitsio and souvlaki.

We sat and basked in the warmth of the sunshine and enjoyed every bite. The live music was great as well as the dancing, there were troops of all ages, but I liked the kids the best. Everyone stopped what they were doing and gathered when the kids started dancing.

After the dancing and people watching, it was time for dessert (Galaktoboureko, Baklava and Anise Biscotti) and coffee all followed by a bus ride home.

Eat Real

Yesterday late in the afternoon Tim and I went over to Oakland's Jack London Square for the Eat Real Festival. Get more info on Eat Real here. It is an amazing event bringing together local food trucks, local food artisans and lots of food related anything you can think of. There is a DIY stage where you can learn all kinds of culinary tasks from making your own mozzarella to butchering your own beast. Despite the thousands of people and my dislike for large gatherings of people with no room to breathe let alone walk down the sidewalk, it was very fun! We went to the VIP reception (since I work for one of the main sponsors) and got to spend time off the clock with some of my coworkers, which was cool.

Here is a list of the foods we enjoyed - not all of them were photographed as I had to hold my beer in one hand and eat with the other! Please keep in mind, this is a lot of food but not really full size servings as everything was under $5 each!

My recommendation if you plan on checking this event out in the future, go in the late afternoon or at dinner time. The crowds seem to dissipate leaving more room to actually walk.

Truck Love

Call it what you will but I am obsessed with pickup trucks, I have been since the moment my Uncle Larry pulled up in a big red pickup truck in my parent's drive way when I was a kid. Sitting in it made me feel on top of the world and when I was old enough and had the means, I bought myself a big red pickup truck - see photo here. Now I live in the city and parking would be a big hassle, so until I move up North or out into the burbs all I can do is look and obsess and take pictures of all the cool trucks I see around town (except that huge red one lower left, that was in Michigan). Just thought I would share my love and my collection of photos I put together from my cell phone.
PS - see the beat up white one on the left, 3rd row down? Same as my first red truck! I can spot them anywhere.

Making Pie

I think my favorite thing to bake is pie, I mean I love a good cake and you can't deny the smell of homemade bread but there is something very comforting and reminiscent of home about a pie. My Mom used to bake pies for our neighbors restaurant, how cool is that? So I guess its in my blood.

This weekend I made a cherry pie in a new pie dish I got from my friend Amy for my birthday which made it even more fun. There is something so therapeutic about making the crust, rolling it out and piecing the hand-cut top together. The smell of pastry and fruit in the oven is divine - if I could bottle that smell I'd be a millionaire for sure.

I have not done a post like this in a while, so I thought I would create a random list of favorite things to share. Basically, things I love as of late and feel life is a little better when they are a part of it. Who knows, maybe one of them will become one of your favorite things.

1. Olay Total Effects Acne Control Cream Cleanser - because I am not getting any younger, but my skin still acts like its a teenager in certain areas.

2. Olay Total Effects Moisturizer Plus Cooling Hydration - again, I am no spring chicken.

3. Tokyo Milk Paper & Cotton No. 17 Perfume - so nice, a little spicy and woodsy and I love it!

4. Sephora Ultra Shine Lip Gloss No. 20 Shiny Perfect Nude - natural and makes me feel like I have something going on, even when I don't.

5. OPI Nail Polish - Samoan Sand - I stopped biting my nails and like to keep them painted a natural color to keep them protected.

6. Orly Sec N' Dry (combo top coat and quick dry) - I love painting my nails but hate waiting for them to dry and this seems to save some time.

7. Post-it® Flag+ Combination Highlighter and Pen - seriously, a triple threat in a pen...finally!

8. Organic Carrot Juice - no link, homemade, makes me feel so good each day.

9. Ricola Honey Lemon with Echinacea - great for meetings and situations where you tend to get a dry throat, never mind I have had a cough for 2 months now, so it helps!

10. Ciao Bella Blood Orange Sorbet - that cough mentioned above has done a number on my throat and this hits the spot!

11. Pirate Brand, Original Tings - I have loved these for years and can finish a bag in a day, hey, I am not proud of that but these Tings are amazing. Like cheetos minus the cheese; vegan, corny, salty and crunchy, yes please!

Tomato Crazy

I have been buried in tomatoes this past week thanks to my CSA box so I thought I'd share what I have been doing with them besides making a sauce, which was my go in the past.

I super love tomatoes on sprouted wheat bagels or sprouted protein bread with tofutti cream cheese, this is stand by this time of year for breakfast at my house and its so delicious (add red onion slices if you have them for even more flavor).

I have been making pizza at least once a week since the tomatoes have been so abundant and I love roasting/drying them and using them instead of sauce on my pizzas.

Here's how:

:: Preheat oven to 250.

:: Prepare cooling racks (spray them with cooking spray so the tomatoes don't stick or brush them with olive oil). Place racks over baking sheets lined with a silicon mat or parchment paper (easy clean up).

:: Slice tomatoes and place on cooking racks, sprinkle with salt (you are trying to draw the moisture out). I also topped mine with a dash of oregano and very light drizzle of olive oil.

:: Place in oven on center racks and bake for 30 minutes, switch shelves and bake for 30-45

more minutes depending on the thickness of your slices and the variety of your tomatoes (some take longer than others).

:: Remove from the oven when tomatoes are a bit shriveled and dried.

:: Use immediately or place in an airtight container to use within a couple days.

Looking for a good pizza crust? I have been using the following and love it!

:: 1 paket of instant yeast

:: 2 tsp sugar

:: 1 Cup warm water

:: 1/4 Cup vegetable shortening (I use Earth Balance)

- mix the 4 above ingredients together with whisk attachment of mixer, once incorporated (note, the shortening doesn't really mix in well, sort of breaks up, this is normal), change to dough hook and add the following:

:: 3 Cups Flour

:: 2 tsp Salt

- mix with dough hook for a few minutes until dough curls itself around the hook clinging on

for dear life and cleaning the sides of the mixing bowl.

- remove from hook and add to an oiled bowl, turning over once so the top has been oiled.

- cover with plastic wrap and a towel and forget about it for an hour. I let my rise on the stove top, it seems to work well there.

- after one hour, dough should be doubled, punch it down, kneed about 5-10 times on a board and let rest for 15 minutes while you prepare your toppings.

- preheat oven to 500 degrees - screamin' hot

- brush your pan with olive oil

- toss dough to fit your pan and lay it down

- cover with toppings

- bake 10 minutes then rotate in oven, bake 5-10 more until done to your liking. I like a crispy

bottom so I check the bottom with a pancake turner (usually bake about 20 minutes total for a toasty golden bottom, but ovens vary so please keep checking as no one wants a burnt pizza).

- remove from oven, let cool about 5-7 minutes, slice and enjoy - preferably with an ice cold Peroni.

Sister Emily

My sister Emily was here visiting last Wednesday until yesterday morning. As we get older, I feel we grow even closer. She is the peanut butter to my chocolate and I miss her already. I wish we lived closer to each other and I know we will one day.

We had a really fun Monday night and made it sort of progressive dinner. We started at Emmy's Spaghetti Shack and got a cocktail and dinner. Second, we walked down to Mission Pie and each got a slice of pie. After our sweet break and a little walk, we headed down to El Rio for a night cap. We wanted to check out the evening's events there since they had Fry Bread on their calendar. A Navajo gentleman comes to El Rio and makes Fry Bread and sells it based on donation, which is pretty sweet. Seemed like they may have been a bit behind schedule Monday night, but it was still fun. Great music and a cool back area, I had not been there in years. When we left we got propositioned by a Russian man looking for us to join him for a burlesque style party. It was hilarious and I reenacted it the entire walk home and we laughed.

I dropped Emily off at the airport yesterday morning, I cried. Every time she leaves I feel she takes a little piece of myself with her.

I do feel super blessed to have been able to spend time with my sister in Arizona at Christmas, Chicago in May for her Graduation, Michigan trip in July and this past long weekend here in California. So funny we have seen each other 4 times in the last 9 months each time in a different state!

I miss you my sister, our next visit cannot come soon enough.

Beach House Weekend

This past weekend was the 9th Annual Beach House weekend with me and my closest girl friends. We met on the Sonoma Coast on Friday evening and locked ourselves in a beautiful house on the beach until Monday. The weather was foggy as usual, the sun came out by the time we were driving away on Monday, which was sad, but we had a wonderful time.

This year was probably the most relaxing and rejuvenating of them all, maybe it was just me, but I was really able to just relax and hang out and ate like a little piggy!

I didn't even take a group photo this year, but I did take photos of some of the wonderful food we ate. I am lucky that all of my friends are such wonderful cooks.

Easy Summer Dinner

I decided to make an effortless dinner tonight with all local produce, cheese and bread and it was simple and delicious.

I made a Greek salad with red onion, cucumber, tomatoes, fresh chopped oregano and olive oil (salt and pepper to taste). So easy to make and bursting with farm fresh flavors.

To accompany the salad I made some toasted bread with fresh local mozzarella. I sliced the bread, drizzled with olive oil, topped with a slice of the cheese and some pepper and baked at 450 for about 8 minutes and then put under the boiler for about 2 minutes until the cheese bubbled and browned on top.

I would make this again in a heartbeat, of course we ate it with a side of olives!

Food Tour SF

Friday I got a chance to go on a food tour of San Francisco. I love working for a company that encourages people to get out there and check out local popular food places.

Here are some highlights:

:: Waiting in line at Tartine to get one of the best pan au chocolates I have ever had in my life, it was worth the wait.

:: Cakes at Tartine are incredible looking, I love the abnormal shape (first photo, left side) the lemon meringue cake is on my wish list. Can you see that toasty brown goodness?

:: Savory pastry selection is incredible, my coworker got the tomato and ham quiche (first photo, right side)

:: BiRite Market, squeezing down the narrow aisles full of lovely olive oils, pasta and cheese. I actually went back today for fresh mozzarella, oregano, olive oil and bread for some bruschetta later this evening.

:: DeLessio Market and Bakery; the Tres Leches Cake and Rabanada looked incredible.

:: Cheese Plus, my friend Ray owns this store so its always nice to see a friendly face. Cool indy ice cream from Ohio and lots of gourmet stuff that is very tempting.

We went made a couple more (not very impressive) stops and then had lunch at Liberty Cafe in my neighborhood, followed by a walk to Sandbox Bakery to get some macarons for dessert.

It was a great day out and about. Thanks Amy for picking me up and driving around the city, I love when work stuff can also feel like fun! It was nice to get out, since I have been cooped up lately.

Juicing Machine

I have been going through some personal health stuff lately, and when this happens, I turn to juicing before anything else. I think that juicing lots of root vegetables helps to keep me grounded during times that could cause anxiety, stress, etc. I believe you can heal yourself with food; the more I read, the more I believe that. I just wish more doctors were on board.

So...lots of meditating and lots and lots of fresh juice each day.

This is my favorite mix:

:: one granny smith apple

:: 2 beets

:: 3 lbs. carrots

:: one thumb size piece of ginger

All organic produce of course and to mix things up, sometimes I add a Valencia orange to the above mixture, if I don't eat it before I juice it that is (seems like once I cut it, I just want to eat it as is).

While juicing yesterday, I had to take these photos - it looks psychedelic.

I knew we were a lot a like, but this year alone has taught me how much we really are cut from the same cloth. I am so glad to have a Dad that is a wonderful role model, sensitive but at the same time is tough as nails, and most of all...fun to be around.

Wrap Star 2

Here is a continuation from my original Wrap Star post from a couple weeks back.

I love gift wrapping and had to share this wrapping from a recent gift I gave my friend Robin.

I used a vintage piece of embroidered French linen from the $5 bin at the Alameda Flea Market and used it instead of paper so it is dual purpose; a small centerpiece/table cloth and wrapping paper. I added a pop of lime with the ribbon and finished the ends with a dove tail. Voila!

What a idyllic way to spend 6 days and 5 nights.
I had very limited iphone connectivity which forced me to unplug for a bit.

It was so nice for Tim and I to spend time with my parents, my sister, and her boyfriend. The weather was ideal, hot and humid just like the summers of my youth. We played croquet, drank a LOT of beer, ate a ton of peanuts and potato chips and lots of other things that aren't in our normal diet but it was delicious.

On our first night we had a fun hot dog dinner with beans, chips, cut up veggies and corn and then my Mom surprised me with a lemonade birthday cake that was cold and lemony; it blew my mind. My Mom makes the best cakes!

The rest of our days were filled with sleeping in, sunning ourselves, playing outside and spending time on the sun porch playing games, reading and just hanging out. Tim and I took a little day trip on Monday and drove around the thumb of Michigan along the water and then back through the farmland, which I absolutely love. This trip made me incredibly homesick for Michigan. The lakeside towns are small, old, and so cute. I found a little grocery store for sale near the tip of the thumb that I can't stop dreaming of owning one day...I have so many ideas for it. Can you imagine me riding a snow mobile to work in the winter? What about delivering groceries to summer home renters in a big red pick up truck? I can see it very clearly.

There is a lighthouse beckoning me home and there I will go early tomorrow morning.

Before the sun rises, I will leave the west coast for Michigan, my home state.

Saying Goodbye

I had to throw away my favorite shirt on Friday.

Most of you have seen me in this shirt, once, twice, lets face it...fifty times.

This was that one piece of clothing that I always felt good in, whether with jeans and cowboy boots or with yoga pants on a long plane ride. It was roomy, great colors and was super soft and worn in.

I had it for over 2 years and wore it at least once a week.

Well, it finally got a little thin in one spot and stated to tear so what did I do? I tore it even more, because if I didn't I probably would have thought it was ok to continue wearing it and it is not, it was time for it to go. Sometimes it is best to go out with a bang.

Homemade Lunch

I had the best lunch today, I have to share.

I love being able to take time and make myself a somewhat healthy lunch.

Today was delicious.

Toasted sprouted whole grain bread rubbed with a clove of garlic, topped with sliced heirloom tomato, drizzle with olive oil, put a slice of cheese on top and dust with salt and pepper.

Holy Moley it is good!

Birthday Weekend

This past weekend, Tim and I headed down to San Jose to celebrate both Robin's Birthday as well as mine. It was fantastic! Angela and Frankie came from Sacramento so there was a nice group of us together ready for a fun weekend.

Saturday afternoon we all just hung out, prepped for dinner and laughed a lot.

Tim and Kenny taught Frankie how to play the wii, which was pretty hilarious to watch - they were swinging virtual swords at each other. Boys are silly.

Robin's Mom and Dad came over for dinner along with her sister Stephanie, husband John and their kids Isabella and Rachel. We had a great dinner of ribs, chicken, mac and cheese, cole slaw, garlic bread and ice cold beer. I love my extended Urban Family, they are incredible people and I am so lucky to have all of them in my life.

After dinner we all enjoyed cake and ice cream followed by dancing wii games in the family room.

Later in the evening, after the locals went home, Kenny lit a fire in their fire pit and Angela, Tim, Robin and I sat out in the back yard talking until the wee hours of the morning. After not much sleep, we woke up and Angela baked a french toast casserole that we made together the night prior and then ate breakfast outside in the backyard. It was delicious. It was a beautiful day so we decided to walk to the park. Frankie got to play and run around, we all played frisbee, catch with the football and just laid in the grass before heading back to the house. After a quick dip in the pool for Tim and Frankie, we had a nice lunch of leftovers and green salad. Angela and Frankie packed up and left to go and visit her cousin in San Jose before heading back to Sacramento and the rest of us watched a comedy show on TV and took naps. We headed home around 6:15, by the time we got home we were super tired but ended up staying up, checking email, watching tv, etc. When it was time to go to bed, I walked into the bedroom and on my bedside table there was a little light blue bag with a white ribbon on it and it ends up Tim got me a new wedding band from Tiffany's! It is super simple, and so perfect for me, I slept with it on and love it so much. Tim did real good this year to say the least.

Thanks Robin and Kenny for having us for the weekend it was super nice, I miss the sun already. Thanks Angela for coming all the way from Sacto, I hope we can do this more often.

It is so nice to have a friend that has a birthday so close to your own, that way not only can you celebrate together, you can take turns making the cake each year. Last year Robin made a wonderfully delicious Hummingbird Cake, this year I decided to take a stab at this Blueberry Lemon Cake. I baked the cake and made the frosting at home and assembled it at Robin and Kenny's house with the help of Robin's niece Isabella (8) who asked so sweetly if she could help, so I let her decorate the entire thing and it was beautiful. She did an excellent job!

This cake is fabulous, fruity and dense because it has buttermilk in it, make it, you will like it!

I am so glad there is a shelf for BayLee on our console table. I don't know what I would do if he didn't have a place to relax and observe us each and every evening. BayLee is so funny, he will literally sit and stare at us for hours and then he disappears into the bedroom for a while. I swear, one day I am going to find his top secret human observation journal. Until that day comes, I can only speculate as to what is going on in his kitty brain.

The spread shows a couple hats by Gucci, I would have loved it if they took more of a risk and used more "daringly individualistic" hats, but beggars cannot be choosers I guess. I am happy with the mere mention of hats.

Busy Sunday

I got a bright and early start this morning and went to the Alameda Point Antiques Faire with Amy. We were super lucky to have met up there at 8:00 am because it was blistering hot even that early and when we left at 10:00 am there was a HUGE line of at least 1000 people waiting in line to get tickets to get in past the gates. No line for the early birds and we saw about 2/3 of the entire faire; if you have not been before it is massive and takes place on the old airstrip so it is full sun when it is sunny and no shade at all. Pure heat bouncing off concrete. After two hours and an ice cold Jamba Juice (thank God they have a stand there) we were ready to get out of there and get brunch somewhere. We ate at Chop Bar in Oakland, which was very good. I would love to go back and see what their dinner menu is like plus they have a great cocktail menu (there was no way I could have had one, I would have passed out). I think we each had three different drinks; water, agua fresca (grapefruit ginger) and sparkling water; it was hard to get rehydrated after our morning in the sun. Great morning indeed, was home by 12:30; time to take a two hour rest with a book, bed, fan and a little nap before my next adventure.

At 3:00 pm I went to Mission Pie for a little get together with my studio mates. It was great to meet everyone that I had not met before. In our shared space there are 7 of us and all women which we think is pretty cool. The majority of the time I am there, I am the only one as we all have very different schedules. Before I went home I got chicken pot pies to heat up for dinner, score! Now I just have to turn on the oven in this heat, oh well! No fog today in the city and hope it stays this way tomorrow so we can see the fireworks from our neighborhood.

Summer Produce

After sleeping in until about 10 AM (luxurious), I got bit by the baking bug and decided to use the beautiful zucchini I got this week in some zucchini bread. I found a great recipe on smitten kitchen that called for olive or vegetable oil so I decided to try it with the olive. I was a bit apprehensive as the last time I baked a sweet bread with olive oil it was terrible, but Angela makes a cake with it, so I thought I would give it a try since my last attempt was years ago. The bread turned out amazing, I added cranberries and left the nuts out. The mister has already had a half a loaf (good thing I made two). I had plans to make a crisp out of my white nectarines, but after eating one just the way nature intended, there was no way I could adulterate them. They are incredible just the way they are; just as sweet as the sunny spot that glides across my kitchen floor each afternoon.

Italian Baked Eggs

Super easy and great meal for dinner tonight.

We got our CSA box tonight and it was full of tomatoes, onions and basil (amongst other things) so I decided to use them right away and make baked eggs.

You will need:

1 small onion (chopped)
1 clove of garlic (chopped)
2 medium heirloom tomatoes (diced)
6 basil leaves (chopped finely)
4 organic eggs
2 Tbls. Parmesan cheese (grated)
2 small pie plates or small baking dishes - if don't have this, you can bake it all in one dish or break into 4 ramekins or custard cups, just use what you have.
Butter or olive oil (Earth Balance)

Preheat oven to 350.

Grease baking containers with butter, oil or Earth Balance.

Saute onions in a small fry pan until translucent, add garlic and tomatoes and let simmer for about 10 minutes to get some moisture out.

To each baking dish, with a slotted spoon, add half of the onion and tomato mixture and top with finely chopped basil and crack 2 eggs on top of all of that. Try not to break the yolk, I wasn't so lucky with one of mine.

Bake for 15-20 minutes until egg is opaque.

Remove from oven and top with salt, pepper and half of the cheese.

Serve with toasted crusty bread.

Enjoy!

A Great Night Out

Last night we went out to Frankie's Bohemian Cafe on Divisadero to celebrate Angela and Brian's 10 year Wedding Anniversary! They met at Frankie's 11 years ago and named their son Frankie when he was born 4 years ago. We had a great meal of spaetzle, beer, calamari, french fries and god knows what else, it was a smorgasbord of deliciousness. After dinner little Frankie left with Grandma and Grandpa to spend the night at their house and it was time to party.
We walked down to the Lion Pub, which might be my new favorite spot to have a drink and listen to bumping top 40 music (it is awesome). I had not been there for years and the last time was with Angela so I thought, why not revisit and it did not let us down. They have crazy drinks like Lady Gaga, PB & J (shot) and Charlie Sheen just to name a few. To sum up the evening, I will leave you with this...
Remember that scene in Sixteen Candles where Farmer Ted has such a great night and the one piece of evidence he has is that cheesy photo of him and Caroline (the prom queen) in Jake's Dad's Rolls Royce?
Well...this is the one and only photo I took last night as evidence of our good time.
Sorry Angela and Brian, I didn't even get a photo of you together on your anniversary, just this crazy one of Angela and Tim which is currently cracking me up!

Trail Mix Cookies

This was posted a while back, but they were so good, I thought I would repost! I must make these soon, I can taste them right now!

Trail Mix Cookies
Preheat oven to 350 degrees and cut parchment for cookie sheets, set aside.

In mixing bowl cream together:
:: 1 C. Butter, Shortening or Margarine
:: 1 1/2 C. Brown Sugar
:: 1/2 C. Granulated Sugar

ADD
:: 1 tsp. Almond extract (pure, not imitation)
:: 2 Eggs, Eggbeaters or Egg Replacer

In a separate bowl sift together:
:: 1 1/2 Cup All Purpose Flour
:: 1 tsp. Ground Cinnamon
:: 1 tsp. Baking Soda
:: 1/2 tsp Salt

Slowly add dry mixture to wet mixture with mixer on low so you don't get flour poofing all over your counter and yourself for that matter.

Once it is all incorporated and smooth add the following:
:: 3 Cups Rolled Oats (old fashioned, not quick) - mix on medium

Then, add (while mixing on low - I pulse my mixer as not to crush any of the good stuff):
:: 1 Large Dark Chocolate Bar (chopped)
:: 1/3 C. Sliced Almonds
:: 1/2 C. Chopped Pecans
:: 1/2 C. Dried Cranberries (or cherries)
:: 1/2 C. Raisins

Drop by tablespoons full onto parchment covered cookie sheet and bake 12-15 minutes until golden brown. Move to cooling rack and enjoy!

Millinery Workshop with Wayne Wichern

I just completed a 3 Day Felt & Straw Blocking Millinery Workshop with Wayne Wichern. I have been looking at Wayne's classes for some time now and decided it was time to take the plunge. I have honestly been dreaming of learning how to make hats since I was small child and would gaze at the beautiful hats at the Cohen Millinery on our annual trips to Greenfield Village. I always thought my dream job, besides being a writer, would be a Milliner with my own little shop. This weekend I got to try my hand at it and you know what...I really loved it! Once I entered Wayne's studio I was mesmerized by the amazing collection of hat blocks he has, my brain was on instant creative overdrive. I had to reel myself in as I wanted to stick with at least some of the ideas I came to class with. Wayne is a wonderful instructor who gently guided our small class of 4 (wonderful women) through the hat making process with patience and grace. Wayne is a master of his craft and is really inspiring, he even has a ballet background, which most of you know is very near and dear to my heart. Wayne is a problem solver, creative genius and was able to make us laugh while teaching us valuable millinery skills.

Creating hats is both physical and gentle at the same time. Parts of the process (like blocking) you are putting your entire body into it and smaller parts (like adding trim) you are sewing with a light hand paying attention to detail. Wayne got me over my fear of the sewing machine and helped me create some beautiful hats that I cannot wait to wear around town. I may even take a sewing class soon to work on being more comfortable at the machine. I have a machine, but it always gives me problems, I realized that the machine may not be the problem (gasp...).

This one is still in the works; I need to add the trim.
These are ready to wear. I wish more people wore hats. I think some ladies believe they have to be "dressed" to wear hats, but I don't think that is always the case and would like to shift that sort of thinking. Why not wear a nice button down shirt, some dark jeans, nice boots and top it all off with a great hat? I say go for it!

PS - used my old point and shoot this weekend, which worked great in Wayne's studio, not so good at home when shooting the hats on my make shift hat model.

Summertime Nostalgia

Each summer I tend to get a little nostalgic, longing for the summers of my youth by the Great Lakes; the feel of warm sand beneath my feet, the sun soaking through my skin and warming my bones. The taste of sweet cherries and the sound the pits would make as they whizzed out the window of our brown Chevrolet Malibu station wagon. No seat belts in the back seat of the car so when the perforated Naugahyde got too hot you could move freely to release your thighs from the seat leaving little bumps where your skin sunk into the vinyl pattern as you relaxed. It seemed to take forever to get to our idyllic spot by the lake each summer and the question every kid asks "are we there yet" came up I am sure way too often for my parents. I have many wonderful memories of summer as a child in Michigan and when the family house was sold last year I thought that might be the last of them.

This summer my parents decided to rent a house on Lake Huron (a block away) for a couple weeks and I was bummed that I wasn't going to be able to join them. Every time I see the Pure Michigan commercials I get misty thinking about Michigan in the summertime and how much I really do miss it. I just want to be warm in the summer, that's all, it is not warm here people. I want to take a time out, be carefree again, read a book outside and walk along the water and collect sea glass (lake glass?) even if just for a few days. Call it haste, call it spontaneous craziness or what you will - I won't be offended but...

I bit the bullet, bought myself a ticket and am headed to Michigan (home sweet home) to hang out and relax on the Lake in a few weeks. I am trying not to have any expectations, but do have a little list of things I must do while I am there. This is not a stretch to relive the days of my youth, let's just call it a time out from adulthood for a few days, that's all. I am excited! UPDATE - Tim is now coming too! Very exciting...getting ready for Pure Michigan.

The Citizen Hotel

As promised last week, here is a quick review of The Citizen Hotel in Sacramento. I am reviewing this hotel, 1. because I thought the room was super cute, and 2. who doesn't like to see what hotel rooms really look like from someone who has been there. If you are looking for a cool place to spend the night in Sacramento, I highly recommend The Citizen Hotel. We were lucky enough to use our hotels.com points and got a Jr. Suite!

Super cute place, love all of the political decor throughout the hallways and in the rooms. I super love their do not disturb door signs that simply state "closed door session". To top it all off, we had a view of the capitol from our shower window.

The restaurant/bar called Grange at the hotel had some yummy drinks and a pretty good nosh selection, but very small portions (when ordered off the bar menu). Tim had a drink called the Tusk (Grange House Blend Woodford Boubon, boar bacon syrup and a candied bacon strip as a swizzle stick) I had a Strawberry Julep which was delicious.

I highly recommend this hotel, check hotels.com when booking.

One drawback...valet parking only.

Wrap Star

I love wrapping gifts and when it came time for me to wrap a journal for a dear friend this morning, I thought...what can I do differently? Then I looked over at my mountain of fashion magazines and started flipping through for a great 2 page spread.

Here is what I came up with.

First cut out the two page spread and tape it together on the backside of what you are going to use. Then, line it up so the image you want on the front of your gift is in the right place and continue wrapping. I had a seam in the middle of the front of my gift so I just used a ribbon to cover it. That's it, cute gift wrap and green too!

The Ribbonerie

I was over in Laurel Heights the other day to get new tires for my Jeep when it struck me...isn't there a killer ribbon store over here somewhere? So, I pulled out my trusty iphone (which I have decided, I cannot live without) and looked it up, The Ribbonerie popped up so when the new rubber was ready to hit the road I headed over.

I knew from the window out front that what I was about to enter was something of a ribbon dreamland and it did not disappoint. The owner of the store was super helpful when I told her what I was looking for and let me take all the time I wanted to poke around. This shop has the most amazing antique fixtures, things that were specifically made for spools of ribbon and sewing goods. There is a wall of vintage millinery feathers, german velvet leaves and fruit and so many other goodies; it was a kaleidoscope of color for the eyes. I picked up a couple things for a class I am taking next weekend and was on my way, but you know what? I will be back for sure!

Frankie's 4th!

A little behind on posts and I don't have too many photos (believe it or not), but, it was Frankie's 4th Birthday this past weekend (4 on the 4th)! We went up to Sacramento on Saturday with Robin and Kenny - we fought terrible traffic but made it up there in time to decorate and enjoy the party. The great thing was, it stopped raining for the festivities.

Great food, great friends and a super cute Birthday Boy!

We spent the night in Sacramento (hotel review in a future post) and then met Angela and Frankie for brunch on Sunday before heading back home.

Thanks Robin and Kenny for offering to drive, that was very sweet and made the ride a lot more fun.
